Hand-Blown Laboratory Glass Era

Laboratory glassblower shaping borosilicate flask with precision tools in dimly lit workshop
1971 — 1984
Foundational Precision Glassblowing

Anneal was established in 1971 by ceramic engineer Robert Hale in a converted machine shop outside Houston. The first decade was defined by hand-blown borosilicate laboratory vessels — reaction flasks, condensers, and custom distillation columns for petrochemical research labs. Every piece was blown to client-specified dimensions by a three-man team, with wall thickness held to ±0.3 mm by hand.

Technical Advancement

Mastered annealing kiln profiles for stress-free borosilicate, establishing thermal expansion coefficients and strain-point data that remain the basis of all Anneal product datasheets today.

Tempered Architectural Panel Pivot

Industrial glass panel being inspected under fluorescent light in fabrication facility
1985 — 1997
Industrial Scale & Float Glass Processing

The oil bust of 1985 forced a strategic pivot. Robert's son Marcus Hale led the acquisition of a horizontal tempering furnace, opening Anneal to architectural and industrial glazing contracts. Tempered safety panels for refinery control rooms, chemical plant observation windows, and blast-rated door lites became the growth engine. Production scaled from 400 units to 12,000 square feet of tempered panel annually by 1992.

Technical Advancement

Introduced precision edge-grinding and CNC drilling capabilities. Achieved ASTM C1048 certification for heat-treated glass in 1989 — the first Texas-based fabricator to do so for chemical plant applications.

Borosilicate Process Piping Systems

Borosilicate glass process piping system in pharmaceutical manufacturing cleanroom environment
1998 — 2009
Chemical-Resistant Engineered Tubing

A contract with a major Gulf Coast pharmaceutical manufacturer in 1998 launched Anneal into process piping. Custom borosilicate glass pipe systems — DN15 through DN200 — for API synthesis reactors, solvent handling lines, and acid-waste drains became the technical flagship. Each pipe run is designed to client P&ID drawings, with flange faces ground to DIN 28120 tolerances and PTFE-lined joints for chemical compatibility.

Technical Advancement

Developed in-house hydrostatic pressure testing rig rated to 10 bar. Introduced chemical-compatibility matrix documentation for 140+ reagents — the foundation of the current Specification Library.

Laminated Blast-Resistance Systems

2010 — 2023
Offshore & Refinery Blast-Rated Enclosures

Following the 2005 Texas City refinery incident, API 752/753 risk-based siting studies drove demand for blast-resistant glazing across the Gulf. Anneal invested in laminated glass production lines — PVB and SGP interlayer systems — capable of meeting ASTM F1642 blast test criteria. Offshore platform window assemblies rated to 5 psi overpressure and 100 ms positive phase duration became the company's highest-margin product line.

Technical Advancement

Achieved UL 752 Level 3 ballistic certification and ASTM F1642 blast rating. Introduced structural silicone glazing systems for blast-resistant curtain wall integration. Became a qualified vendor on 3 major EPC contractor approved vendor lists.

Electrochromic Smart Glass R&D

Advanced laboratory with electrochromic glass panels showing tint transition in industrial research facility
2024 — Present
Active Glazing for Process Control Environments

Anneal's current R&D program focuses on electrochromic (EC) glass integration for industrial environments — switchable glazing for reactor observation windows that can shift from 70% VLT to 5% VLT on demand, protecting operators during high-intensity process events. Pilot installations are underway at two Gulf Coast chemical facilities. EC control systems are designed to integrate with DCS/SCADA via 4–20 mA or Modbus RTU.

Technical Advancement

First industrial-grade EC glazing system rated for continuous operation in Class 1 Div 2 hazardous areas. Targeting ATEX Zone 2 certification in Q3 2025. Proprietary sol-gel coating process achieves switching cycle life >100,000 transitions.
